online tutoringTutoring, in general, is the assistance provided to help a student excel in the subjects of: science (subcategories usually include: Earth, Biology, Physics and Chemistry); math (including: Basic, Algebra, Trigonometry and Calculus), English Literature and many more courses of study.  With a tutor (or mentor), students learn studying skills, which allows them to turn in their work on time, and effectively study for upcoming exams.  In some cases, tutors may also be available to proofread a student’s essay and offer suggestions for improvement.

An internet connection is necessary for online tutoring to work, and broadband is recommended.  Skype is a common way to verbally communicate while online, or some other audio connection would be helpful.

All online tutoring sessions are conducted through a virtual classroom.  A student will register on a secure site, and login into a V-classroom to seek help with a particular assignment, daily homework or assistance in preparing for an exam.   It is possible that the tutoring site will request an online assessment of the students’ strengths, and then evaluate the areas of study that require improvement.

Regarding your tutor, a background check is usually available, as can telephone and email addresses be verified, as well as other contact information.

Online vs. Conventional Tutoring Services

Conventional tutoring needs to be scheduled at a time and place that works for both the student and the tutor.  The advantage to online tutoring is that it is available 24/7 (any place and time).  When a student logs into a virtual classroom, rarely will you encounter the same tutor.

More advantages to using online tutoring services:

  1. Distractions are kept to a minimum when using online tutoring.
  2. Online tutoring is a less intimidating environment, especially for shy students.
  3. Home-based is not only a familiar and comfortable atmosphere, but also time effective, because there is no need to meet a tutor at some central location.
  4. Online tutoring (because of the “white board” and only technology) is fun, and keeps the student from quickly becoming bored.
  5. Parents/Guardians are not shut out, and there is no worry about the work not getting done, and they can listen in on the tutoring session and possibly learn something in the process.

Online Tutoring Fees

The fee to access many online tutoring classrooms is based on “per minute” services.  This straight forward fee is popular among students, because there are no hidden fees, and they (the student) are more in control of how long their tutoring sessions will be.  In some instances, minutes can be purchased in advance (which also makes this a great gift for a student that may be struggling with a particular subject).  Some sites may charge monthly fees, which can become costly, especially if the student does not use the offered services often enough to justify the monthly fee.

Legitimate online tutoring services will, more likely than not, supply everything you may need (such as text messaging options, file sharing and drawing boards).  There should be no need to purchase (or download) extra types of software.
