To determine whether you should get a GED® certificate or a high school diploma, you first need to understand the differences and what your end goals are.

Getting your GED® certificate involves passing a series of tests in five core subject areas: social studies, science, reading, mathematics, and writing. You do not need to take any classes in order to take the GED® test. You just need to pass the tests.

Getting a high school diploma requires you attend and pass an equivalent of four years of school. What specific classes you would need to take depends on the requirements of your state. In most cases, you will be required to take at least four years of english, three years of math, two years of science and two years of history. You will also be required to take elective classes.

As an adult learner, comparing the two, it may seem like getting a GED® certificate is the better option. It’s easier and faster. However, there are quite a few limitations to a GED@ certificate. For instance, not all employers recognize it as a valid high school equivalency. The military is more selective with GED® applicants, and certain positions later on within the military require a high school diploma. A number of four year universities and technical colleges are also selective about GED® certificates.

On the other hand, a high school diploma is accepted everywhere. It’s understandable how the GED® system has gained traction, even though it is not accepted everywhere as a diploma substitute. For an adult learner looking to go back to high school, you used to have to attend an actual school while juggling work and family – not an ideal situation.

However, with online high school programs, this obstacle has been removed. Not only can you literally attend classes wherever you have a computer with internet access, but you can take them on your own time, at your own pace. Since nearly every online high school program also offers free tutoring or online community support, you don’t have to worry about getting stuck either.

The best part is that more online programs will recognize classes you’ve already taken. Some even offer “testing-out” options, where you can test out of a subject if you are able to pass a test that indicates knowledge of the material. These types of features can get you on your way to obtain a high school diploma faster than you think.

When it comes down to it, with a little more effort, you can have an actual high school diploma instead of a substitute. If this is something you’d like to learn more about, take a few minutes and talk to one of our advisors.
